This guy ran Mt. Washington!

Mt. Washington is the highest peak in New Hampshire and home to the world's worst weather. The peak sits at about 6,288 ft and is actually reachable by a road. The road climbs about 5,000 feet in 7.6 miles, with an average grade of 12% and some places reaching as much as 22%. It is straight up the entire way and is punishing for cars. I had read a while back about a race that is held on this very road and about how ridiculous it is. I knew that running Mt. Washington must go on my "Things to do" list. And so, vacation in New Hampshire in the White Mountains seemed the perfect time to do it.

Ashley and Gabriel dropped me on the entrance road on the way in and assaulted the mountain by car. I started running from the toll house and never looked back. It is not common at all for someone to be running the mountain outside of race day, so i got a lot of looks of amazement from tourists as they drove by, some cheering for me and telling me i was almost there. This run was by far harder than any training run or race that i have done, even tougher than all of the marathons i have tackled. It was a nonstop punishment from start to finish. The only relief i got was when the road flattened to an 8% grade!! I averaged 11:45 per mile, which seems terrible considering most of the time i run in the 6-6:30 range, but as compared to the hills, it was actually pretty good. I really started to feel it in my legs around mile 3, but i was determined not to walk. I kept my head down and kept putting 1 foot in front of the other. At mile 4, asphalt gave way to dirt, and the road straightened and steepened. If Gabriel and Ashley (and little baby boy) were not waiting for me at the top, i would have stopped and walked or rested a bit. But I didn't, and i kept on moving.

I started to notice the thin air around mile 5, which was also about 5,000 feet in elevation, and I also began to notice the giant blister forming in my arch from running on my toes the whole time. I still was not going to quit, but I did notice that now my mile split was slower than 13 minutes!! The miles were crawling by, it seemed as if I would never make it, I could see there was still a lot of mountain to climb. I just had to keep thinking about who was waiting for me at the top, and that soon enough, I would round a corner and there they would be.

By now there were no more trees around me, just rocks and small shrubs and road continuing to the sky. Mile 6 went by in a blur, and I could feel my legs began to get achy and crampy. It took all my mental strength to force myself not to walk. With less than a mile to go, I saw the top, the summit was in reach, I was going to do it. I could hang on now, I was passing 7 miles, just a few more minutes left. As the observatory came into view, I could see lots of people milling around on top of it, and out on the rocks in front of it, I could see my 2 biggest fans waiting for me. I hit the parking lot and in 1:26 and still had enough energy left to catch Gabriel as he was running across the parking to congratulate me. I did it!! I ran the hardest run I have ever done. I am so glad I got the chance to do it, and so excited Gabriel and Ashley could be there to share it with me!! And glad they could give me a ride back down!!!

Queens Half Marathon

2 days before this half marathon i suffered a hernia at my summer job. While it is painful and uncomfortable, it was not quite at the emergency level, although it will require surgery. Nonetheless, i wanted to at least participate in this race, even if i had to walk it. So, i started off slow, about a 7:15 first mile ( I normally come out about 5:45) and then followed with a 7:00. In order to run, i had shortened my stride by half so as not to agrivate my injury. Feeling comfortable with this pace, i decieded to slowly increase my pace. As the miles went by, i passed runners left and right who had zoomed past me earlier. By mile 7, I had reached a pace of 6:05! I was still uncomfortable, but holding togther. By the finish, I had a clocked a 1:24:34 and placed 36th overall out of nearly 5,000 runners and got 7th in my age group. I was floored by my performance and exhausted with the strange running form I had adopted. I now eagerly await surgery and a full recovery.

Run for City Parks 4 mile race

I've had a tough past 3 weeks, and my milage has almost been non-existant. So, today's race, i wanted to just run a 23:00 for 4 miles, which is 5:45 per mile. I started off under control, roling through the first mile in 5:35, and covering mile 2 in 5:31. At this point, i was on pace eclipse my 4 mile PR by 10 seconds. But, mile 3 totally killed me (It is almost completely uphill) and i clocked a 6:14. I did, however, pull it together, and mustered a 5:39 for the final mile, finishing in a time of 22:59 and taking 13th place. This was good enough to earn me 2nd place in my age group. Hopefully this will jumpstart my running, and help me shake off this funk.

I first hit the park for what I thought was going to be a 6 mile run, but i was not feeling like being in the park, so i cut it to 5.2 miles and turned it into a tempo run. I hit the roads at a 6:15 pace and motored through the hills. It felt good to fly.

As soon as i finished, i went with Ash to run her run. We did a little mroe than 3 miles, hitting the snow covered paths again up in the north hills. SO enjoyable to break up the ordinary. We had a nice relaxing run, and got a chance to stop and marvel at the frozen over duck pond. I enjoy these days we get to run together with no agenda.

I covered about 8.5 miles for the day, sounds good to me!!

With our incredibly busy schedule, the only time for me to get my running in is at night. While Ashley puts Gabriel down for the night, i go hit the park. Its not the best time in the world, but the only time that works for us. Tried it tonight, did a solid 6 mile around the par. It was ridiculously crowded with club runners. Oh well, ran about a 6:30 pace, got my run done, missed putting G down.

I own the night....

Back at school, I have now pushed the running to night time, so i can work and play with Gabriel and Ash after work, then whilst people are asleep, i can enjoy MY park. I went out around 10 pm for the same 6 mile loop, just in reverse. It was below freezing, and i forgot my gloves, which was brutal. On my run, my mind wandered to my high school and college friend Richard Lee, who would always talk about these crazy things that could be done if you use mind power. He was always coming up with weired bio-mechanical ideas( what if you had armor that was one with your flesh, and you wore it like skin, but when it got damaged, you could shed it like a snake and put on new armor... etc). I began to think of the story he would tell of Buddhist monks who could stand out in the brutal cold with very little clothing on but they would not freeze because they had such control of their bodies, they could mentally tell their body to raise its core temperature to combat the cold. This way, they could be out for hours and not be affected. On my run, i told my hands to warm themselves. My hands didn't listen....although I mentally insisted very strongly.

I did 6 in about 39:30, a little more than 6:35 pace. My lungs were burning. Hopefully in the next few days/weeks, i can shift to morning running, something I have yet to maintain.

Last day of Freedom......back to school

My last day of freedom, I went out to run in the park for the first time since the marathon. Fresh memories of that rough race came flooding back. 2:57 was a terrible time for me and a dissappoining finish to a hard triained and promising season. 3 weeks prior i blasted my Half marathon PR by a minute! I still struggle with what went wrong, although i know the main reason: racing flats with 400+ mile son them. I had forgotten how much i used them, and they gave out about mile 10.

Well, thats in the past but not forgotten, I will race the marathon again, and it will be with better results. The take away from teh race was sharing it with Ash and getting to stop and see Gabriel twice on the race course. Those are memories i will alwasy treasure!!

So, i ran 6 miles in 37:30ish, a 6:15 pace, yeah I know, I was a little excited. The next few weeks I am just getting used to running again.

Happy New Year!

I've taken off almost all of December with my fire related ankle injury and have just tried to enjoy the holiday season. On Christmas day, I went out for a 6.5 mile run in Harrisburg, PA. It was a rude awakening for my lungs and legs( 6:30 pace), but it was nice to get out. I also went out the day after for a 5 mile easy run with Steve.

On New Year's day, to kick off the new running season, I went out with Ash and G and we did a relaxed 2 miles through the ice and snow. My goal race for the spring is the Brooklyn Half marathon in Late May. i am forgoing a spring marathon and instead focusing on my half marathon time. Last year's Staten Island Half (1:14:38, a PR and 3rd place out of 5,000 people) was inspiring and has lead me to push myself more at this distance. Plus, i can run more than 2 halfs a year without beating myself up.

So, it's a new year, a new season, and i hope for some new successes!
