Icy 6 x 800m

Tonight's interval workout was kind of difficult due to the ice and snow. The entire drives were covered in ice, making it impossible to get any speed. I was very close to just quiting after seeing my times from the first interval, but i figured i was already out there, i might as well run it. I did it regardless, with times slower than the 2:40 I wanted. I recovered 1 minute between each 800. My times were: 2:54, 2:52, 2:56, 2:48, 2:51, 2:48. In total, I covered 6.5 miles. In 2 weeks, i will be doing a track workout at the armory in Harlem, the greatest indoor track in the nation. I'm looking forward to that!

6 mile Figure 8 in Central Park

Tonight's run was just an easy recovery run through the park. I had to battle the freezing rain as i went. Good think i ran early, it dumped 15 inches of snow later in the night. I'm just taking it easy after a tempo run last night

7 mile tempo....still sick feeling

I'm still feeling rough tonight. I tried a tempo run, running 2 easy miles, then 1 mile hard, then 1 easy, 1 hard, and finally 2 easy. My fast miles were 5:43 and 5:35. I'll take it, i am still feeling rough. Hopefully I'll be back to normal soon

Reluctant 6 by runandy

Not only was I reluctant to get out in the 15 F weather, but my body was reluctant to respond to running. My splits were pedestrian and i felt like I was breathing harder than i should. At the very least, i can log miles. It was rough, and i feel like i am getting sick. Only time will tell.......

Manhattan Half Marathon

15 F at the start, this course is challenging and filled with hills. It was too cold to really race, managed to squeak aout a 30th place finish out of over 4,300 runners. My time was just under 1:20, i'm pleased with it, because of the 6 weeks off i took. Looking forward to the Brooklyn Half in May. (The splits are a little off due to the accuracy of the Garmin, but still pretty close)

6 mile Figure 8 in the Park

Easy run tonight, taking it easy until the Manhattan Half on Saturday morning. I was really not feeling it tonight, felt real sluggish, but at least I got it in before the snow started and the temperature was not too bad, around freezing.

5 miles off the beaten path

...and then, I took off on a zig zag route through the park, winding around on all the pathways to accumulate my 5 miles. It was a nice easy run, and luckily most of the ice and snow was melted off the paths. 8 for the day!!

3 mile family run

Tonight it was warm enough for G and I to join Ash on her easy run tonight. By warm enough, i mean not below freezing!! It was nice family outing!

Too Icy!!

With the ice storm dropping inches of ice in the park, i was not about to get hit in the head by a fallen branch. I took the night off instead.

‎6 Mile Loop Central Park (CW)

Today was an easy effort, recovering from yesterday's "long" run. It was an easy 6 mile lap around Central Park. I felt relaxed, and it was a nice way to end the week.

West Side 10 Mile Loop

Today I did just over 10 miles, combining the West Side Highway running path with a little of the park. I was able to maintain a nice pace, in the mid to low 6:20's. Some of the footing was rough, as we still have tons of ice and snow on the ground. It was a nice solid effort, and not really too cold, it was actually 32!!

Brrrrr......another snowstorm

Last night it dumped 9 inches of snow on us, on top of the left over snow from two weeks ago. Its been a winter wonderland for weeks. I went out tonight and did about 6.5 miles, hitting up the West Side Highway. It was freezing on the river, but nice and snow covered. Aside from the cold and the fact that i drenched my shoes in the first half mile, i had a nice quick run. I'm beginning to get used to this night running thing. Hope I can keep it up!

Hills and Hounds

Ash and I took advanatge again of Steph being in town and we went out for a hill workout run, trying to make it quick. It was freezing! Another nice run together, we put in around 3.6 miles. We had to make it quick so we could have dinner with Steph before she hit the skies.

After dinner, I went out for a run of my own, dragging the pups along with me. we covered 2.8 miles and suprisingly enough, they did a nice job keeping up. SO, it was nice day for runnning, totaling about 6.5 miles for the day. Onward and upward!!

Double time

I ran twice today, been a long long time since I did that. I first hit the park for what I thought was going to be a 6 mile run, but i was not feeling like being in the park, so i cut it to 5.2 miles and turned it into a tempo run. I hit the roads at a 6:15 pace and motored through the hills. It felt good to fly.

As soon as i finished, i went with Ash to run her run. We did a little mroe than 3 miles, hitting the snow covered paths again up in the north hills. SO enjoyable to break up the ordinary. We had a nice relaxing run, and got a chance to stop and marvel at the frozen over duck pond. I enjoy these days we get to run together with no agenda.

I covered about 8.5 miles for the day, sounds good to me!!

Ash and Me!

With Steph in town, Ash and I were able to go out and run togther. We did a nice 5.2 mile run through the park, hitting some snow covered trails and just doing a little exploring. It was nice to be out together and do some stress free running together. Even though we miss G, it was nice to get off the roads for a bit.

Another easy 6

Ran another 6 miles tonight, just trying to fit it all in. Nothing exciting, just trying to get back into the groove of things, trying to build up my base again.

Still owning it.

With our incredibly busy schedule, the only time for me to get my running in is at night. While Ashley puts Gabriel down for the night, i go hit the park. Its not the best time in the world, but the only time that works for us. Tried it tonight, did a solid 6 mile around the par. It was ridiculously crowded with club runners. Oh well, ran about a 6:30 pace, got my run done, missed putting G down.

I own the night....

Back at school, I have now pushed the running to night time, so i can work and play with Gabriel and Ash after work, then whilst people are asleep, i can enjoy MY park. I went out around 10 pm for the same 6 mile loop, just in reverse. It was below freezing, and i forgot my gloves, which was brutal. On my run, my mind wandered to my high school and college friend Richard Lee, who would always talk about these crazy things that could be done if you use mind power. He was always coming up with weired bio-mechanical ideas( what if you had armor that was one with your flesh, and you wore it like skin, but when it got damaged, you could shed it like a snake and put on new armor... etc). I began to think of the story he would tell of Buddhist monks who could stand out in the brutal cold with very little clothing on but they would not freeze because they had such control of their bodies, they could mentally tell their body to raise its core temperature to combat the cold. This way, they could be out for hours and not be affected. On my run, i told my hands to warm themselves. My hands didn't listen....although I mentally insisted very strongly.

I did 6 in about 39:30, a little more than 6:35 pace. My lungs were burning. Hopefully in the next few days/weeks, i can shift to morning running, something I have yet to maintain.

Last day of Freedom......back to school

My last day of freedom, I went out to run in the park for the first time since the marathon. Fresh memories of that rough race came flooding back. 2:57 was a terrible time for me and a dissappoining finish to a hard triained and promising season. 3 weeks prior i blasted my Half marathon PR by a minute! I still struggle with what went wrong, although i know the main reason: racing flats with 400+ mile son them. I had forgotten how much i used them, and they gave out about mile 10.

Well, thats in the past but not forgotten, I will race the marathon again, and it will be with better results. The take away from teh race was sharing it with Ash and getting to stop and see Gabriel twice on the race course. Those are memories i will alwasy treasure!!

So, i ran 6 miles in 37:30ish, a 6:15 pace, yeah I know, I was a little excited. The next few weeks I am just getting used to running again.

Happy New Year!

I've taken off almost all of December with my fire related ankle injury and have just tried to enjoy the holiday season. On Christmas day, I went out for a 6.5 mile run in Harrisburg, PA. It was a rude awakening for my lungs and legs( 6:30 pace), but it was nice to get out. I also went out the day after for a 5 mile easy run with Steve.

On New Year's day, to kick off the new running season, I went out with Ash and G and we did a relaxed 2 miles through the ice and snow. My goal race for the spring is the Brooklyn Half marathon in Late May. i am forgoing a spring marathon and instead focusing on my half marathon time. Last year's Staten Island Half (1:14:38, a PR and 3rd place out of 5,000 people) was inspiring and has lead me to push myself more at this distance. Plus, i can run more than 2 halfs a year without beating myself up.

So, it's a new year, a new season, and i hope for some new successes!
